How to recognize anxiety in your dreams

Dreams are the way our sub-conscious mind speaks with us, sends us messages letting us know what to look for in our waking life, it is also the way it communicates with us when we are stressed or anxious.

What are Anxiety Dreams?

An anxiety dream, refers to any dreams that cause stress or distress. You may feel panicked or nervous during the day and these feelings will carry on into the night and your dreamscape. 

Some general causes that can lead to anxiety dreams are:

  • fear and stress
  • recent life changes that cause uncertainty
  • traumatic events
  • insomnia
  • Substance uses such as drugs or alcohol

Common themes in anxiety dreams

Falling

Falling doesn't matter where you are falling from in your dream, it can be from a building, cliff or somewhere else, however the meaning of falling in your dreams is a feeling of a lack of control in your life. This could stem from you feeling nervous about a situation in your life, exams or a presentation coming up, or a relationship ending.

Natural Disasters

Whether it's a cyclone, tsunami, earthquake, tornado or some other natural disaster, it usually means you are feeling overwhelmed in your waking life. Each event will mean something slightly different for example a dream about earthquakes can mean the loss of stability in your life whereas a dream about a cyclone or hurricane can mean an unwillingness to face a difficult situation in your life.

Being naked in public

Ever had that dream of being naked in front of your school class, or giving a speech and being naked?

This dream can mean you are being exposed in some way and embarrassed about something, or feeling you cannot conceal yourself or attributes of yourself that you have deemed unattractive or unworthy.

Being chased

If you are dreaming about being pursued in your dream, this could indicate that you are running away from something in your waking life. It could be a person and relationship breakdown, or a decision that needs to me made, whatever it is you need to stop running from it in your waking life to stop the dream from reoccurring.

Missing your mode of transport

Are you dreaming about missing your train, bus or plane?

These dreams can be a warning about an impending deadline or event that is coming up in your near future.

If your dreaming of being delayed in a train or plane, this could indicate you are feeling incapable or incompetent at work. 

Being driven in a car to an unknown destination

If you are dreaming of being a passenger in a car heading to an unknown destination, this could indicate a lack of control in your waking life. This could be in regards to your finances, a relationship or other area of your life. The theme in this dream is echoing the anxiety you are feeling in your waking life.

Teeth falling out

This is one that I get the most out of the stress related or anxiety dreams.

If you are dreaming of losing your teeth, this is usually associated with important life changes or dealing with some kind of loss such as the ending of a relationship or a career change.
